Microsoft Vice President Paul Maritz says that by the 1999 model year, automobiles might run software based on Microsoft Windows. He suggests people’s cars will remember drivers’ address books and schedules, and even “read” e-mail to the driver while going down the road.
 “You’ve got to keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel,” Maritz said, but “it’s well within the realm of current technology.” (Reuters) ...Just what we need: extremely cheap cars that crash and burn without cause or warning.

A 19-year-old University of Delaware student fell three stories from his dorm room balcony after losing his balance while sitting on the rail, leaving him in serious condition.
Just an hour earlier, in an apparently unrelated incident, another 19-year-old student was having trouble with his computer in his dorm room. He “got up and ran around the room in a pique of anger,” a witness said, and then slammed his fist into his window. Not only did that break the window, but the student, apparently surprised that the glass didn’t hold his weight, lost his balance and fell through — 13 stories to his death.
